Why prices don't go back after a sale

The sale is over, but some products still show the sale price. Or a sale says it is active, yet half the store shows the regular price. Merchants describe both in app reviews. Here is why it happens.

How many sale apps work

Some apps run a sale by editing your products. At the start they rewrite the price of every variant. At the end they write every original price back.

That is two big batches of edits, and the second one has to succeed on every single variant. If one edit fails, that product keeps the wrong price. Nothing on your store tells you, because the product just looks like it has a new price.

What merchants report

Reviews of edit-and-restore apps return to the same few problems:

  • Prices stuck at the sale price after the sale ended.
  • Prices still changed after the app was uninstalled.
  • A sale shown as "active" while the prices on the store were wrong or only partly changed.

None of these need a bad app. They follow from the design: when the sale lives in your product prices, ending it means rewriting your product prices, and any write can fail.

Why uninstalling makes it worse

When you uninstall an app, Shopify removes its access. If the app had changed your prices, it can no longer change them back. Whatever was on your products at that moment stays there.

A sale with nothing to put back

Untouched never edits a product price or compare-at price. It puts the sale prices in a Shopify catalog with a price list of fixed prices. To end the sale, it deletes the catalog, and shoppers see your regular prices again at once. There is no second pass of edits, so there is nothing to get stuck.

Checking, not trusting

A sale app saying "active" is not the same as shoppers seeing the right price. Untouched reads the price shoppers see for every variant at the start, every 15 minutes during the sale and at the end, and shows you the result. If a price is wrong, you see it on the Sales page instead of hearing it from a customer.

The honest limits

  • Uninstalling during a live sale still leaves something behind: the catalog keeps running until you delete it by hand. The app emails the store owner the steps. Your product prices are still the ones you set, so deleting the catalog is all it takes.
  • Markets with their own currency or their own catalog are left out of the sale.
